DIY WAX CRAYONS

This is such a fun and simple activity no matter how old you are kid or not!

All you'll need is

Silicone mould in a design of your choice
A selection of different coloured crayons

This is a great way to upcycle old crayons that have been broken and unloved. However, we just got a big batch of fresh crayons as we made these for India's friends as cute Christmas gifts.

Pre-heat oven to 100°C/212°F/Gas Mark 1. Next, work on removing the wrappers from the crayons. This can be quite tricky but amazing for keeping the little ones busy! We can pretend it's for fine motor skills...or pay back for all the times they've woken us up at 4am for the DAY. If you're making them i suggest putting them in warm water for 10 minutes and the skins will come right off.
Next you'll want to break the crayons into small pieces and fill each of the spaces in the mould with them. The smaller the pieces, the quicker and easier they will melt. Make sure you NOT to overfill each mould, they will melt down and when they do you can go in with extra pieces. Otherwise you will end up with them bleeding in to other moulds.

Place the mould on a baking tray and bake in the oven for around 6 - 8 minutes, add extra crayons if needed... pop back in the oven for another 6 minutes or until the crayons have melted completely.
Remove the baking tray from the oven very carefully, Tap the tray on the side to release any air bubbles and leave on a flat surface to cool for about 30 minutes or untill completely hardened.

( play with different colours in the same mould, they always come out so unique and you can always play with a toothpick to get a marbled effect once out of the oven. )

When the bottom of the mould is completely cool, it’s time to release the crayons from it. Start by gently pulling and stretching the mould to loosen the crayons, then push each crayon up and out from the bottom.

It's a great rainy day activity and perfect for cute DIY gifts.
We're going to be making some alphabet letters at the weekend!
Let me know how you get on with yours!
